Statement

Working primarily with fiber in some of its many forms, I’m interested in pattern -- pattern as a repetition of a motif. In nature’s patterns, I love how a motif is repeated identically at first glance, but on examination is a little different with each copy. Think of waves, of pine boughs. I work with pattern produced by the hand, not by mechanical means. I love catching how pattern changes subtly as the hand does its best to produce identical iterations. Bridget Riley’s optical patterns appear to be perfectly straight lines, twisting and vibrating in space. But if you approach to the drawing or painting, you’ll notice that the edges waver just a bit – a pattern made by hand, not by software.
I use patterns that echo each other -- waves and tree bark and mokume shibori dye patterns. I love patterns with unexpected elements -- a formal toile pattern composed not of Baroque maidens on swings, but of insects. I play patterns against each other, varying scale and tone, finding the repetition in the variation.
