Mignonette Yin Cheng, who was born in Amoy, China, is an emerita professor of the University of Michigan School of Art, where she taught drawing and painting from 1963 until 1996, when she retired to paint full-time. During her years at the School of Art, Cheng also participated in and directed a popular series of U-M School of Art watercolor workshops in Florence, Italy. In 1996 a book of her Italian paintings titled Watercolors of Italy was published.
From 1997 to 2000, Cheng and her husband lived in Hong Kong, where she was able to travel extensively in Mainland China, Singapore, Bhutan and Bali and reacquaint herself with the scenery and color of the region. Many of the paintings in Cheng's current exhibition are inspired by her travels, both in the Far East and in Europe.
Cheng's work at River Gallery includes oils and watercolors of China, Italy, Ireland, Scotland and England, oil & wax emulsion paintings on linen, collages on paper and linen, and a large collection of work in gouache on paper.
